Berita menarik yang aku jumpa dalam RSS reader Edge Magazine hari ini adalah sesuatu mengenai golongan gamer dan cara pemanduan mereka di jalan-raya.

A study by Continental Tyres has found that people who regularly play driving games make for worse drivers than non-gamers.

Continental asked 2,000 motorists– half of whom were regular gamers – between 17 and 39 years old about their driving habits. While gamers proclaimed themselves better drivers – giving their skill behind the wheel an average of six out of ten, one more than non-gamers, and also believing they had quicker reaction times and better understanding of gear changes and cornering – the results were quite different.

Twice as many gamers as non-gamers admit to having made an insurance claim following an accident and run a red light in the last twelve months. Furthermore, gamers are twice as likely to take risks, such as accelerate too quickly or overtake, speed, and suffer road rage than drivers who don’t play games.

The study also found that playing games for extended periods of time worsens the effect. Those playing more than eight hours a week have been in three times as many accidents as those who play for less than an hour.

Berikut adalah penjelasan mereka beri dari kajian mereka lakukan tersebut.

It seems that while gamers develop useful skills and are more confident, they need to apply some balance with a sensible assessment of risk. Playing computer driving games means good concentration levels and improved reaction times, however, they can take more risks than non-gaming drivers, possibly due to the lack of real consequences in games.

The most important issues for driving safely are concentration, an appreciation of road and vehicle conditions and an awareness of potential risks. Clearly driving games can develop these skills but that has to be balanced.

Secara jujurnya aku rasa ia mungkin boleh menjadi seperti begitu, mungkin juga tidak, terpulang kepada seseorang individu itu bagaimana, kalau mereka jenis yang cekap dalam pemanduan, tau beza antara realiti dan virtual, tindak-balas pantas, aku rasa takde masalah. Mungkin apa yang Continental Tyres ingin maksudkan sebernanya adalah, golongan gamers dah tak sopan cara memandu kot, berbeza dengan mereka yang tak pernah bermain games langsung, mungkin cara pemanduan golongan gamers ni agak aggressive dan pantas?
